Cartoon Map FAQ

Q: What is a cartoon map?
A cartoon map is a custom, illustrated map in a friendly, pleasant, positive cartoon style. It details the major roads and includes "standout" illustrations of local landmarks, tourist attractions and businesses. Cartoon maps can be a lively, effective way to advertise and draw traffic. Many tourists keep their cartoon maps as souvenirs, making them a lasting and powerful way to advertise and distribute information. Q: What parts of your cartoon maps do I as a client have control over?
Our maps reflect YOUR needs and project goals. The client has complete control over the featured sites, roadways, decorative elements, and regional themes.

Q: What is included in your standard cartoon maps?
Our standard cartoon map is typically a 3/4 view "from above" with a distant horizon. It can contain a title, a legend or other text material supplied by the client, and a decorative border which if desired includes an index legend (A B C ..... and 1 2 3 ....). Major locations and areas are labeled. Anywhere from 10-25 landmarks and /or businesses are indicated with original customer cartoon illustrations (larger maps can have more site illustrations).

Q: Can your cartoon maps have a regional theme?
Absolutely! Images of people, flora and fauna typical of the area can be shown. Regional themes can be emphasized. We will work closely with you to make sure we capture the themes and "flavor" of the region in a delightful and compelling way. In addition, we provide a specified number of rough drafts during the project for you to review and make corrections and changes.

Q:What format do you deliver the work in?
Our cartoon maps are original art, custom-drawn just for your project! We can fax or FedEx the rough pencil sketches. The final color artwork (a mix of ink and watercolor on heavy illustration board) is delivered to you or your printer. The standard format we work in is 11 x 17 inches, but we can create your map in any size, any proportion!

Q:Do you handle the printing?
Most printers prefer to work from the original art and have qualified experts on staff to handle issues such as digital conversion, color separation, etc. Whenever possible, we like to talk to your printer ahead of time to make sure we deliver artwork that looks and prints great!

Q:How long does it take to create a cartoon map?
We are very fast and responsive. A number of factors determine how long the project will take, including whether or not you can supply reference maps and photos, how quickly drafts are approved, how many changes are required and what your own timeline is. Generally, 3-5 weeks is a reasonable time for the entire project from first consultation to the delivery of final artwork. We also offer a rush rate for extremely urgent projects.

Q:What is your fee?
We work and invoice on a hourly basis. Our rates are very reasonable for custom illustration work. We would be delighted to discuss your project with you and provide you with a proposal outlining cost, scope of project and timing.
